Flying in

There are 4 airports you can fly into which are listed below in the order of preference.

Which airport will i fly into?

Consider
  • flights are cheaper on Thursday or Monday so you could book an
Extra nights stay at the centre
  • the cost of the flight and the times and dates available
  • ease and time of getting from the airport to the centre
  • and also cost of this
  • and whether your nearest airport links directly with the airport

Please note
New routes are being introduced all the time, especially by companies such as flybe, easyjet, aer arann and others. The information below may not be the latest story.

Shannon airport

Fairly large airport with flights from many international airports.

Shannon airport website (recommended big airport, easy access to centre)

Reduced fare taxi costs approx 60 Euro, takes approx 50 minutes to centre, may be possible to share taxi (see taxi information at above link).

Possible to travel by bus to Gort and then taxi from there. Can take 2 hours depending on bus times.

Bus Eireann website See 'Your Journey' 'Printed Timetables' 'Expressway Long Distance services' and see Route Cork Limerick Shannon airport Galway. Get off at Gort, and centre is 6 miles away.

Galway airport

Small airport but you may be lucky to get a cheap flight there.

Galway airport website (easy access to centre, small airport)

Flights from Glasgow, Luton, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bermingham, Lorient.

Reduced fare taxi costs approx 55 Euro direct to the centre, and takes approx 40 minutes.

Galway airport is about 15 minutes drive from Galway city. There is no bus, so one would need to take a taxi to Galway city, bus station if one wanted to catch a bus to Gort, and then another taxi to the centre. This bus and two taxi's is probably not any cheaper than one single taxi direct to the centre.

Much much easier and quicker to take the Reduced fare taxi direct to the centre.

Dublin airport

Largest main airport of Ireland with flights from many international and also smaller airports.

Dublin airport website (3 to 5 hour car drive, or up to 5 hours by 1 bus direct to Galway and 1 taxi)

Consider how you will get from Dublin to the centre. Car journey takes between 3 and 5 hours depending on traffic around Dublin.

Bus takes approx 3 hours to Galway city. And then you have a 30 minute taxi ride from there.

Getting from Dublin airport to the centre

Knock

Very small airport 50 miles North of Galway.

Flights from Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, Stansted.

May be difficult to get from Knock to the centre. Taxi costs €100 to Galway city. or there is a CIE Bus from airport to Charlestown, and then another bus to Foxford, and then another to Galway city. Then taxi from Galway to centre.

Consider hiring a car. See below.

CIE Bus Website

Knock airport website (50 miles North of Galway, Burren Yoga is 27 miles south of Galway)

Reduced fare Taxi

Reduced fare taxi

You can save a small amount of money by taking the Galway bus from Shannon airport and getting off in Gort.

But you are strongly recommended to get the taxi. Buses in Ireland may be fun if you have all day and a good sense of humor.

You may even be able to share the taxi if someone else is arriving in around the same time. The taxi company will know this information.

Public transport to the centre

Hiring a car

You may like to hire a car for your stay. This gives you the freedom to explore the Burren and the rest of Ireland if you wish.

Cheap flights & airline websites

Both Ryan Air and Aer Lingus offer cheap flights. Best to check their websites and remember it may be cheaper to fly one way with Ryan air and the opposite journey with Aer Lingus.

Good idea to consider the other airlines below.
