Environmental Impact Management Plan Introduction: The Environmental Policy document describes how the business has minimal if any impact on the environment, and should be read before this current Impact Management Plan. The Environmental Policy explains how we focus our efforts on designing systems that prevent or minimise usage of energy rather than simply relying on reducing wastage. Use of Energy: The buildings have been specially designed to minimise the amount of energy required for heating and also for lighting. The buildings are very high specification timber frame with additional levels of insulation. Outside the timber frame there is a cavity with further insulation and then an external block wall which is plastered. The design also includes large amounts of passive solar heating which brings in natural heat from the sun, and also a large amount of natural daylight which minimises the need for artificial lighting. However, as the building was completed in 1999, the heating system is an oil boiler, and we try to minimise the use of this where possible. We have installed timer thermostats in each room, so that we can individually set the temperature of each room for 6 time periods during the day. This has allowed us to keep certain parts of the buildings warm at particular times of the day, while not supplying heat to other parts that don’t need it at that time. We have also installed an electricity meter in order to measure the real-time use of electricity. The monitor shows when we have high electricity usage, and by investigation we have used it in the past to identify certain appliances which have been using high amounts of electricity. Electricity usage is monitored on a daily on going basis, and we have a real-time monitor installed so that we can view the usage at any time direct from the screen on our kitchen table. We have used this information to replace all our outdoor lighting with low energy light bulbs, and also installed timers and movement sensors so that the light only come on at certain times during the evening, but will also come on if someone walks in front of one of the 5 sensors during the night time. We also replaced all the light bulbs in the reading lights over each bed with low energy bulbs, as sometimes the guests can forget to switch these lights off. Many of the lights in the main house are on dimmer switches so that we can alter the mood, and we have planned to replace these with dimming LED lights over the next 6 months. The new building which will be completed in 2013 will use LED lighting throughout the whole building, with a few CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) bulbs used where light levels of illumination required. We have also installed a gas drier which is much more efficient at drying the bed linen than the older electrical drier. We chose A rated electrical appliances. Creation of Waste As a result of our Green Purchasing Policy we have negotiated with our supplier of vegetables to use re-usage plastic crates to deliver the vegetables. This was agreed in 2008, and these plastic crates are returned to the supplier who re-uses them. By providing filtered water to our guests from our own well, this saves them from having to buy plastic bottled water. We purchase a lot of our vegetables direct from the growers and all the crates are returned for reuse. Our Green Purchasing Policy also states that when we can’t reuse packaging, that we try to minimise it. All our raw food waste is composted and then used to fertilize the trees and shrubbery on the grounds. In 2008, we spent time with our cook to explain the importance of reducing wastage of food, so Paddi has implemented this by carefully checking food stock before planning menus for the next retreat, in order to minimise the amount of food needed to be ordered, and also minimising wastage of food after the first meal served to the group on a retreat, to calculate how much food they tend to eat, in order to better estimates of amount to prepare for the next meal for certain meals, to lift the food onto the plates for the guests, rather than letting the guests help themselves in a buffet style. This allows for much better estimation of amount of food needed for each meal and reduced wastage by analysing food stock levels over the past year, Paddi was better able to predict how much ‘bulk items’ to order so that we reduce the amount we order and keep less bulk food in stock In 2009, Paddi also began to keep track of any food which went past it’s sell by date, or which vegetables went off before being able to use it. This heightened awareness of wastage of possible of food, and also helped reduce our expenses. Paddi also carefully rotates all the stock when it is delivered in order to prevent accidental use of newer stock rather than using the old stock first. When people fill in their booking forms, we ask them how they will be travelling here, and we try to team people together to organize lifts coming to the centre. We have also setup a reduced fare taxi scheme when bringing people here from the airport or from Galway city, and there is 1 single nominated taxi company in each place that we recommend to our visitors, and these taxi companies then team-up people who are coming here so that they share the taxi between them. We also have information on the website about getting here by public transport including bus, train, ferry & train. We also car-share on our outings so that we take as few cars as possible. Any glass bottles are recycled and we take these to [...]

So if this is the 14th February, you could go to Quote number 14… and so on. Or you could choose a number between 1 and 31, and go to that quote. Daily inspiration from the Dalai Lama 1st day of the month 2nd day of the month 3rd day of the month 4th day of the month 5th day of the month 6th day of the month 7th day of the month 8th day of the month 9th day of the month 10th day of the month 11th day of the month 12th day of the month 13th day of the month 14th day of the month 15th day of the month 16th day of the month 17th day of the month 18th day of the month 19th day of the month 20th day of the month 21st day of the month 22nd day of the month 23rd day of the month 24th day of the month 25th day of the month 26th day of the month 27th day of the month 28th day of the month 29th day of the month 30th day of the month 31st day of the month Working with one’s mind is the key to transformation These are lovely reminders to us that the core of transformation is through working with the mind and our attitudes, and that the best way to do this is through meditation which has been the cornerstone of yoga practice for over 5,000 years and still is for the traditional forms of yoga. Some more modern (past 100 years) forms of yoga have lost sight of this, and have mainly focused on the physical asanas. However it is through the meditation and the other more subtle heart felt practices that we are able to get more in touch with our own true inner nature, and let go of selfishness and open more to love and compassion for all. Thankfully many yoga teachers within these more physical schools of yoga also practice meditation themselves, and they also bring these practices and teaching to their classes and workshops.

And although our Yoga and Meditation practices begins the work by first working on ourselves, as time goes by we realize that by working on our more subtle inner energies and inner awareness that we are able to get more in touch with our own true inner nature, and let go of selfishness and open more to love and compassion for all. We are very fortunate to have such good yoga and meditation teachers here at the centre who guide us through the practices to get more in touch with this love and light through every moment and every action that we take.

Kathryn Thomas TV Celebrity visits Burren Yoga This article was written by Kathryn Thomas and published in the Chic Travel section of the Irish Daily Star. A weekend of meditation and yoga with no booze and lots of rabbit food…we are going to feel fabulous!” I reassured my friend Barbara as we pulled into the drive way of the Burren Yoga Centre. It was Friday evening when we would normally be getting ready for a night on the tiles, yet here we were in the middle of nowhere. The drive from Kinvara, Co Galway across the rugged Burren landscape had been amazing and I understood why Dave Brocklebank felt this was the perfect place to set up his retreat back in 1999. Last to arrive, we went straight to the kitchen where the rest of our group were already having dinner in the cosy candlelit kitchen. Chef Paddi, who used to run Seventh Heaven restaurant in Galway, served up a vegetarian feast of wild rice and lentil burgers, carrot and courgette salad with homemade breads followed by chocolate and beetroot cake. Rabbit food, this is not, I can assure you! The chat amongst the group of 15 was relaxed as people got to know each other. While some were travelling in twos and threes, most were on their own — in fact, 90 per cent of people visiting the centre go solo. There are two main buildings; one with the kitchen and yoga room and an adjacent one with bedrooms and bathrooms. Living quarters are pretty basic; shared bunk bed rooms of two, four and six people which won’t appeal to everybody, but you can pay extra to have a single room. After the long drive and with a full belly, I was ready for bed. But not before a half hour meditation class followed by an hour and a half of gentle yoga with Niamh Jones, our instructor for the weekend. The reason I had chosen the bootcamp weekend was because it promised as many yoga classes as possible, so you get maximum practice as well as value for money. There are nine different types of yoga available, from very gentle to quite intense so make sure you choose a course that suits you. The following morning after breakfast and two hours of meditation and yoga, we set off for a hike across the beautiful Burren. The sun was shining, the views were stunning and everyone arrived hungry to the Tearooms in Ballyvaughan. After a fabulous lunch in the conservatory, avoiding the cheesecake that Stephen Spielberg famously flew in especially to eat, it was back for 4pm yoga. I could feel myself stretching into the postures a little more and the energy in the room changed as people really began to slow down, unwind and switch off. After dinner, the chat was animated and fun as those rostered to do so, tidied up, while others set the table for the following morning. It reminded me a bit of being back in Irish college but instead of gossiping about who gave who “the shift” at the back of the ceile hall we talked spine alignment, spirituality and the joys of Downton Abbey. Sunday after breakfast, Niamh had lit a huge fire and the temperature was set for Bikram or hot yoga with 26 postures that claim to stimulate every joint and muscle and increase circulation to all organs of the body. We sweated, twisted and stretched for 90 minutes, eventually lying in thankful silence on the floor. We all lead very busy lives and a few days away in the Burren Yoga Centre is a great reminder of how important it is to make time for ourselves every day. To be still, to be present and to be mindful — even if it is just for 20 minutes before a night on the tiles! Namaste! Fore more, check out www.burrenyoga.com or call 091 637680 Note from Dave Please note this was a strong yoga weekend, and we also have many much more gentle yoga retreats. If you would like to see what types of people come on our retreats, and also which retreats are more gentle than others, you can read more at Who Retreats are suitable for
