Step into a different world for 1 week in Ireland withg the Mysore lads.
"This workshop is great fun! I've never heard so much laughing as during some of the partner yoga classes" Dave Brocklebank
You don't need to bring a partner ;-) as people usually team up and switch around during the week
David Robson and
David Gellineau are returning to teach again at the Burren Yoga and Meditation Centre after their very successful week long courses here in 2003 & also in 2004.
In 2002 & 2003 they were living in
Mysore, India spending their whole time practicing Yoga, learning from Pattabhi Jose’s grandson Sharath and also teaching when time allows. They are also attended other teachers out there in order to improve their own practice and learn more techniques to pass on to others.

The two David’s are gentle in their approach to students, but their depth of knowledge encourages each one of to practice to the limits of one’s ability.

Their Partner Yoga classes are conducted in a more informal manner and include a lot of light humor and good fun in their classes.

This course is suitable for beginners as well as advanced people.
Just because the partner postures in the photos are very difficult, does not mean that these will be the postures you will have to do. ;-) Beginners will be gradually taken through the different asanas and vinyasas (breathing).
More advanced practitioners who know the series will practice at their own pace getting adjustments and being led further into the practice.
This course is for people who wish to work with their physical body through the Astanga practice. And also enjoy some fun and explore some new ways of working with a partner to improve one’s practice.
Course Description
This week long retreat will be an opportunity for participants to deepen their practice of Ashtanga yoga.
Each day will begin with a
morning practice.
The first two days will be led classes in order to familiarize students with the dynamic flow of the Ashtanga vinyasa system.
From the third day on students will be encouraged and guided to develop their practice in mysore-style, self led classes, while David and David will provide hands-on adjustments and instructions.
Every other day there also be an
afternoon workshop in which participants will explore elements of the practice more in-depth. The workshops will also be a chance for students to
ask questions and have individual needs addressed.

David and David have over 10 years of practice in yoga. They have returned from Mysore, India in 2003, after spending 3 months studying with their teacher Sharath Rangaswamy.
They have also spent over 100 hours studying yogasana and pranayama with Yogacharya V. Venkatesh at the Yoga Vigyana Mandira Centre of Yoga Sciences in in Mysore India.
Their creative approach to yoga encourages students to
laugh and have fun.
They focus on linking movement with breath in their practice and their teaching, cultivating equanimity and balance both on and off the mat.
And as usual at the Burren Yoga and Meditation Centre, the week will be interspersed with Paddi's amazing and now famous food, trips into the Burren and the surrounding countryside of County Clare, atlantic sea walks, ancient sites such as Coorcinroe abbey, Kilmacdough tower, Poulnabrone Dolmen, Cliffs of Moher to name but a few.
What is Asthanga YogaAsthanga Yoga is a strong dynamic form of Yoga and which is ideal for increasing flexibility, toning and making the body more supply, while strengthening the muscles and massaging the internal organs producing optimal healthy functioning of the body.
The primary teacher of Asthanga Yoga is Pattabhi Jois who is based in Mysore, India. He in turn was taught this practice by Krishnamacharya who is widely accepted to be one of the most advanced Yogis of the 20th century.
It is practiced as a series of flowing Yoga postures which begin with the Sun Salutations. These heat up the body and prepare the body for the stronger postures which one gradually introduces and builds into one’s own daily practice of the sequence. These stronger stretching and strengthening postures are also practiced within the flowing sequence which follows the Sun Salutations.
One’s breath is controlled and regulated by a practice known as Ujjay breathing. This produces a slight hissing sound in the throat and has an effect of lowering the blood pressure. Thus although one is physically working the body quite strenuously, one feels quite calm and centred which is quite unlike any other aerobic exercises. This allows one maintain an inward focus and a meditative awareness while practicing the sequence.
One’s eyes and attention are also directed towards drishtes (points on which to focus the eyes and attention).
There are also internal locks applied (uddiyana and moola bandha) and these regulate the flow of energy within the nadis (energy channels). They also increase the internal heat of the body.
The internal heat within the body allows one’s body to become more supple and to practice postures which one could not normally practice with a cold unprepared body.
How Asthanga is taught
Asthanga is introduced to beginners with the Sun Salutations first. One practices these sequences initially until one is familiar enough to complete these oneself. If one has previous experience of other Yoga (either Satyananda or Iyengar) then it can take between 30 minutes to 2 hours before one is comfortable enough to practice this sequence by oneself.
Then the rest of the sequence is gradually introduced. Each posture is practiced to one’s own ability and the instructor gives posture corrections and verbal directions to help one learn each posture and also how to flow from one posture to the next.
There is always a closing sequence which consists of a number of back bends and forward bends and a slowing down of the postures and a final relaxation period while one lies in Shavasana.
Self-Practice
On some of the more advanced courses, the classes are given in the style of self practice. It is assumed that each participant knows the sequence and is able to practice by themselves. Usually the instructor goes from each participant to the next and makes appropriate adjustments to one’s postures and encourages one to improve one’s practice beyond what one has attained so far.
1 Week Astanga & Partner Yoga with 2 Davids from Toronto, CanadaThe week will begin gently to allow beginners and those not used to the Astanga sequence learn the Sun Salutations and gradually learn the standing postures, sitting postures and also the flowing vinyasa.
As the week progresses the class will move towards a Self Practice sequence depending on the levels of ability of the course participants.
Each individual participant will be encouraged to practice to their own limits and the week will expand those limits and improve the quality of one’s practice.
Who it is suitable forYou don't need to bring a partner ;-) as most people come on their own and usually team up and switch around during the week
This workshop will be suitable for beginner to intermediate students. While not a requirement, previous experience of Ashtanga Yoga will be beneficial. To find out more about David and David, please visit their website
2 Davids
It is recommended that one already has experience with some other forms of Yoga.
This may not be necessary for younger beginners and those who are already quite fit from other forms of exercise.
You are always encouraged to practice at the level which is suitable for your body. You will gain more benefit and also enjoy the exercises more when you perform at a comfortable level rather than pushing yourself too hard.
When you practice at home after the course, you can gradually increase the duration and the number of postures which one includes in the sequence, as your body gradually improved with regular practice.
This course is for people who wish to work intensively with their physical body through the Astanga practice.
Do people come on their own or with others ?
Most people come to these courses on their own. During the partner yoga sessions, the two David’s will ensure that you are teamed up with someone of suitable build and height in order for you to achieve the best match for working together.
Sometimes people do come in twos or threes, so if you have a friend who may be interested please send the URL of this page to them.
