This course is open to yoga teachers from all traditions, who are already teaching pregnancy yoga and who wish to teach baby-friendly postnatal yoga classes.

The course takes place over two 3 day weekends which are residential at the Burren Yoga and Meditation Centre.

This course is fully recognised by the BWY (British Wheel of Yoga).

Uma Dinsmore-Tuli was first introduced to yoga at the age of four, and has been teaching yoga and meditation since 1986 and training yoga teachers and therapists since 2001.

She has a PhD in Communications from London University, a diploma in Yoga Therapy from the Yoga Biomedical Trust and is a recognised teacher of the British Wheel of Yoga.

Before yoga and mothering took over her life completely, Uma spent seven years as a journalist and ten years working as a lecturer, tutor and course designer in higher education. She draws on her experience as writer, educator and mother to create positive learning experiences and high standards of teaching, training, appraisal and support on all her courses.

Uma teaches the British Wheel of Yoga Module in Pregnancy Yoga, designed the British Wheel Module in Postnatal Yoga and is a member of the British Wheel of Yoga's Child Protection Steering Group. Uma is also a Breastfeeding Counsellor for the National Childbirth Trust. She co-organises the annual Yoga Gathering Santosa, and teaches the family yoga sessions at the Healing Field Gatherings and other festivals. As well as the pregnancy yoga teacher training module, Uma also designed and leads the Yogacampus early years yoga training course, covering family yoga sessions for parents and children from birth to four years.

Uma is a tutor on the Yoga Biomedical Trust/Yogacampus Yoga Therapy Foundation Course, and the Well Woman Yoga Therapy module. She has also worked as a tutor and assessor for Birthlight and British Wheel of Yoga training courses in pregnancy yoga, postnatal yoga and baby yoga.



Together with her husband, clinical hypnotherapist Nirlipta Tuli, she founded Sitaram Partnership in 1998 in order to promote the further education of yoga teachers, and to make yoga more accessible through classes in St Thomas's and King's College Hospital and other places in central and south London.

Uma is the author of three books about yoga therapy for women's health: Mother's Breath (a definitive guide to yoga breathing and awareness practices for pregnancy, postnatal recovery and mothering); Teach Yourself Yoga for Pregnancy and Birth (Hodder and Staughton) and Yoga for Living - Feel Confident (Dorling Kindersley). She has also produced a number of CDs and DVDs to support the practice of pregnancy, postnatal recovery yoga and yoga for the relief of stress.

Uma practices what she preaches: she is mother to three children: Tejomaya, Abhisheka, and Rajakumari Prayaag, who were all born at home in the Sitaram yoga rooms.

Cost of the course

The cost of the course is €350 per weekend. The course consists of two 3 day weekends.

If you are not already a member of BWY (British Wheel of Yoga), you will need to join if you want their qualification. Cost to join BWY is £25 per year.

If you wish to receive the BWY qualification, you have to pay the BWY £45 to receive it.

So if you are not already a member of BYW, the course and qualification will cost a total of €700 (Euros) + £70 (English Pounds)

The cost of the course includes both 3 day weekends, all training and also includes accommodation and vegetarian meals.

The training takes place over two 3-day residential modules. The first is in October 2009 and the second is in April 2010.

The food is cooked by Paddi the gourmet vegetarian chef who ran Seventh Heaven the well known restaurant in Galway city.

A single room costs €120 extra. This is for the 6 day duration of the course.

The full course fee is paid in stages.

The full course fee is to be paid in non-refundable instalments on the following dates;
  • on submission of application form.........€200
  • on acceptance of you for the course......€200 (Euros) + £70 (English pounds)
  • October 30th..........................................€300


Any applicant who is deemed not suitable for the course by Uma, will be refunded their application fee.

The above are the only payments made and the normal cancellation fee on other courses do not apply.

Qualifications received

The qualification is recognised by the BWY (British Wheel of Yoga) and includes a minimum of 40 direct contact hours with the teacher within formal learning classes.

In order to qualify for the BWY (British Wheel of Yoga) certificate, all graduates must be members of BWY. This costs £25 per year, and must be paid to the BWY well before the course.

Students will have the opportunity throughout the course to ensure that they understand the material, through exploration in their own practice, practice teaching, and demonstration of techniques to other students.

In order to complete the required number of training hours, attendance at all classes and modules is mandatory.

On acceptance onto the course, there are some pre-course assignments which you will be expected to email to Uma at least 1 month before the course start date.

There will also be written assignments to complete during the course, and also in the period between the first 3 day training, and the second 3 day training.

Additional nights stay at the centre


To avail of a cheaper flight at the start or end of one’s residential modules, you may like to stay an extra night. Cost is €35 per night. No meals included.

Who is the course suitable for


This course is open to yoga teachers from all traditions, who are already teaching pregnancy yoga and who wish to teach baby-friendly postnatal yoga classes.

The training is validated by the British wheel of Yoga, which means that all teachers on the course need to be registered with the British Wheel of Yoga as members (not necessarily teaching members). To join the British Wheel, please access their website at http://www.bwy.org.uk/join/join.asp

All applicants will be expected to fill in a written form when applying for the course (and emailed to Uma), and may also be called for interview either by email, phone or both.

All applications (even those not satisfying the above requirements) will be carefully reviewed and considered.

The course participants will be carefully chosen by Uma and all applications will be carefully considered.

We only accept 15 people on the training.

Your application will be accessed and we will reply to you as soon as possible letting you know that your application has been successful.

Don't worry.... the reason why we are being so careful in choosing the right people for the course is to ensure a high level of commitment, and a very high standard of teachers graduating from the course.

The aims of the course



  • to provide an holistic approach to the practical application of yoga in postnatal recovery
  • to enable students to re-consider pertinent aspects of yoga philosophy in relation to this major period of change in women's lives, and offer a practical framework for the integration of these philosophical and spiritual approaches to the teaching of postnatal recovery yoga
  • to encourage a critical awareness of a range of different attitudes to postnatal recovery (both within different traditions of yoga practice, and in a wider cultural sense) in order to empower students to evaluate others' perspectives and develop a clear rationale for their own approach to the uses of yoga for postnatal recovery


Course objectives

To enable students to:
  • plan and teach yoga courses (and individual sessions) including asana, pranayama, relaxation,nada yoga and meditations for postnatal recovery for women from six weeks to twelve months after the birth of their babies.
  • demonstrate an understanding both of the key principles of anatomy and physiology relevant to the postnatal period (including lactation), and of the social and psychological changes characteristic of the transition to motherhood.
  • teach with an informed sensitivity to the emotional and spiritual experiences of postnatal women.
  • teach within the appropriate safety guidelines (as may be later agreed by the British Wheel of Yoga) for this type of yoga practice
  • plan and teach (groups and individuals) the basics of yogic approaches to baby handling and carrying (from newborns to eighteen months) in so far as this impacts upon maternal posture, strength and vitality.

There is a €200 non-refundable deposit to submit the application. If for whatever reason, you are deemed not to be suitable for the training, you will be refunded your deposit. Otherwise in all other cases it will be non-refundable and will be part payment for the course fee.

You must also fill in a booking form on the website to accompany your application form. It is sufficient to provide visa or master card details on this booking form to cover your deposit and payment for the course in instalments.
