yogAsana and Meditation Granville Cousins
February 13th - 15th 2008
Description of course
This retreat is aimed at people who wish to work with traditional yoga and meditation with a very experienced and well known teacher; Granville Cousins.

The course also includes an introduction to Buddhist meditation led by Granville and daily teaching and practice of meditation.
The day begins with sitting meditation using breath focus and mindfullness.
Following the meditation, is yogAsana, a combination of flowing postures with an emphasis on inverted work in the morning, and more relaxed postures held for 3 to 5 minutes in the evening session.

yogAsana uses traditional Sun Salutations which gently work the back through alternate backward and forward movements. These sun salutations do not have the usual 'press-up chataranga' postures that are in Ashtanga yoga.
Granville will teach the postures to beginners and concentrates on improving postures and understanding of more seasoned practitioners.

This course is for people who wish to work reasonably intensively using mindfulness and concentration through asana with morning and evening meditation periods over the weekend.
The yoga sessions begin with some Pranayama and then we practice Surya Namaskar, Sun Salutations for 3, 6, or 12 rounds according to ability.

This sequence works the spine backwards and forwards alternately and one's range of movement increases with each repetition. Attention is paid to the correct execution of the Asanas and standing postures are worked on regularly to increase range of movement, correct postural misalignment and to develop stamina and strength

Inverted postures Headstand and Shoulderstand are also included and time will be spent regularly on the Fish Posture and Lying back in Lotus. In the evening session the postures will be mainly seated and can be held for varying lengths of time leading to a relaxed and steady experience of yoga practice. The postures are held in a relaxed way in order to encourage the flow of prana in the energy channels, nadis, and to increase joint mobility through the connective tissue which supports the joints.
We will go outdoors in the Burren and surrounding areas on Saturday.

And the usual amazing vegetarian meals with Paddi the chef.

Instructors
Granville is an experienced teacher and has been practicing yoga for over 20 years. He has studied with Mr. B.K.S. Iyengar at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India and with him on several workshops and classes in the U.K.

He began the Practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in 1995 with Michael Taylor and Elizabeth Wilson in the north of England and then more fully with Radha and the late Derek Ireland at "The Practice Place" in Crete. Having realized the benefits of both Iyengar and Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Granville teaches a synthesis of both of these systems bringing together postural alignment in a dynamic flowing sequence of integrated Asanas.

Utube Granville at Burren Yoga 2007Granville teaches regular classes and workshops in the Manchester area and is a frequent visitor to Ireland where he conducts weekend workshops with his many Yoga Friends. He also leads retreats and holidays abroad in Europe and the Middle-East.
His workshops and holidays are underpinned with early morning and evening Meditation sessions where the practioners are taught to sit quietly in the midst of their own experience. This quiet sitting is the basis of all spiritual practices and is common to all denominations.
