Burren Rock and flowers

This is a photo of a small ledge on the hill outside the Burren Yoga and Meditation Centre.

The hill takes about 35 minutes to climb to the top.

The hill mainly consists of this limestone rock, which is quite easy to climb. There are foot holds and large rocks to walk on, which makes it feel sometimes like walking up a stairway to ....

And as one climbs the hill and goes over the next brow, one thinks one has reached the top, often to be greeted with an unexpected ledge like this one, and another small cliff face to go higher.

The light in the West of Ireland is like nowhere i know of.

Whether it is due to the sky colours being reflected from the Atlantic ocean, or the ever changing skies, the colours and light never cease to amaze the many visitors who come to the centre.

Sometimes the rock can look like molten lava.

While in other places like this flat pavement near Black Head, is ideal to practice yoga outdoors in the summer.

And the huge rocks which were left behind by moving glaciers during the ice age, can look like giant dinasour eggs pecked sometimes in very strange places.

And from in between this apparent barren rock, pops up all sorts of exotic flowers including orchids, gentian viotets and bloody cransbill to name but a couple.

This unusual area known as The Burren which is made up of rock, grass, lakes, and ocean is well known as one of the most unique floral landscapes of the world.

The flaggy shore is about 10 minutes drive from the centre and a lovely place for a walk during the day, or in the evening to watch the sun going down over Galway bay.

Most of the photos below of the flowers are courtesy of Ralph of the Burren Perfumery.

The images in this section are copyright Ralph Doyle 2004.
