What is Hatha Yoga

What is hatha Yoga ?



Hatha yoga is a term used to refer to a form of yoga which involves reasonably gentle yoga postures, some gentle movement postures, some stretching, gentle breathwork and relaxation.

Teachers who say they teach Hatha Yoga often teach different things and in very different ways.

Most hatha yoga classes are quite gentle and suitable for all ages.

However, a few hatha yoga teachers do teach stronger postures and some dynamic sequences of movements.

They are suitable for beginners to intermediate practitioners.

They are all well capable to teach a class of varying capabilities from beginners to advanced.

Please be aware that Anusara yoga is also a form of Hatha yoga, so you may also like to read about Anusara yoga.

Is Hatha Yoga suitable for me ?

If you have no serious medical conditions, and do not have any neck, back or knee injuries, then i would say "Yes, you will be well able for Hatha yoga".

If you are between 14 and 30 years of age, and are looking for a stronger dynamic form of yoga, then maybe Ashtanga or Bikram yoga may give you more of a physical challenge.

If you are over 50 and possibly with injuries or weaknesses and never practiced yoga before, you may prefer a more gentle Satyananda yoga weekend to start with.

However, if you like the idea of doing a reasonably gentle yoga, but still be challenged to stretch a little more, learn useful postures and movements you can practice each day yourself after the course, then Hatha yoga may be the best one for you.
