Instructor:
Brian Smith is a professor of religious studies at the University of California, and and a beloved Tibetan Buddhist teacher (ACI Geshe Michael Roach). His translations of Sanskrit classics such as "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life" have been published by Oxford & Penguin.

Who it is suitable for

This course is open to anyone who is interested in Buddhism.

Timetable for the weekend

Wednesday evening and Thursday evening take place inGalway city.

Friday evening to Sunday evening is residential in the Burren Yoga and Meditation Centre, Cappaghmore, Kinvara, Co. Galway.

Wednesday Evening
  • 7:00-9:30 PM: How to Do a Retreat (General Instructions)


Thursday evening
  • 7:00-9:30 PM: Preparing for the Je Tsongkapa Mantra Retreat


Friday evening
  • 7:00-8:30 PM: Public Talk – "Getting the Most Out of Life"

  • 8:30 PM-9:00 PM – Clean up

  • 9:00-11:00 PM: Set up and begin retreat



Saturday
  • 7:00-8:30 AM: Heart Yoga

  • 8:30-9:30: Lung of mantra; Instruction and Guided Meditation on maduk tru

  • 9:30-10:00: Breakfast

  • 10:00-11:00: Teaching on the Perfection of Giving

  • 11:00-12:00: Instruction and Guided Meditation on mishey sel

  • 12:00-2:00 PM: Lunch and clean-up; rest and study

  • 2:00-3:00: Teaching on the Perfection of Ethical Living

  • 3:00-4:00: Instruction and Guided Meditation on ngudrup drup (part one)

  • 4:00-6:00: Rest, study, walking meditation

  • 6:00-7:00: Dinner and clean-up

  • 7:00-8:00: Teaching on the Perfection of Patience

  • 8:00-9:00: Instruction and Guided Meditation (review)


Sunday
  • 7:00-8:30: Heart Yoga

  • 8:30-9:30: Instruction and Guided Meditation on ngudrup drup (part two)

  • 9:30-10:00: Breakfast

  • 10:00-11:00: Teaching on the Perfection of Joyful Effort

  • 11:00-12:00: Instruction and Guided Meditation on ngudrup drup (part three)

  • 12:00-2:00 PM: Lunch and clean-up; rest and study

  • 2:00-3:00: Teaching on the Perfections of Meditative Concentration and Wisdom

  • 3:00-4:00: Instruction and Guided Meditation (on all the parts of the sadhana)

  • 4:00-5:00: Rest, study, make lists for the future

  • 5:00-6:00: Concluding offerings and thanksgiving, dedication, take down altar, taking down the boundary markers, end of silence, rejoicing

  • 6:00-7:00: Dinner and clean-up

  • 7:00-8:30: Discussion about the retreat (problems, realizations, suggestions, etc.)

  • 8:30 Depart


Accommodation
The accommodation Friday and Saturday night is at the centre is in rooms of 2, 4 or 6 people sharing.

There are also local B&B's and a hotel.

What you should bring with you
Bed linen is supplied, but you will need to bring your own towels.
