Dave Brocklebank

The vision of Dave Brocklebank was to setup a very comfortable yoga centre to help introduce yoga and meditation to as many people as possible, in a quality and enjoyable way.

And to provide an ideal retreat space in which one can come to deepen one's practice of yoga and meditation.

The centre was built May 1999 and in 2004 over 40 courses were run.

There are courses for
  • beginners
  • improvers
  • regular practitioners
  • teachers

There are courses all year round, nearly every weekend.

There are 7-day long courses during the summer months, Christmas, New Year and Easter.

Dave began meditating in 1978 and began practising Yoga in 1989 with the Galway school of Yoga and Meditation which is Satyananda based.

He completed the 2-year Satyananda yoga teacher training with Shradhmurti and Chetanmurti in the Galway school of Yoga and Meditation. He has attended numberous workshops since then (too many to mention) with teachers of many traditions from all over the world.

His classes begin with very gentle loosening up postures which help prepare the body for the stronger postures which are introduced after a number of months. He introduces Pranayama right from day one, and a large emphasis is placed on the awareness of the practitioner rather than their physical ability.

His experience with Iyengar and Astanga yoga bring a detailed approach to correct alignment of the body in order to assume the posture while respecting the limits of one's body.

His teaching of meditation is very clear and understandable for beginners and for advanced meditators alike.

The meditation technique is breath focus and mindfulness.

As the course progresses, he gives less and less instructions, so that one is able to follow the practice without any guidance at the end of the course.

In addition to Dave's yoga lifestyle, he also attends Buddhist teachings and tries to bring these teachings into his own life and dealings with people.

Dave runs the Burren Yoga and Meditation Centre, co-ordinating courses, facilitating workshops and teaching Yoga and Meditation himself. He also maintains his own daily practice of Yoga and Meditation, and regularly attends Yoga workshops throughout the year.

Granville Cousins

Granville is an experienced teacher and has been practicing yoga for over 20 years. He has studied with Mr. B.K.S. Iyengar at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India and with him on several workshops and classes in the U.K.

He began the Practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in 1995 with Michael Taylor and Elizabeth Wilson in the north of England and then more fully with Radha and the late Derek Ireland at "The Practice Place" in Crete. Having realized the benefits of both Iyengar and Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Granville teaches a synthesis of both of these systems bringing together postural alignment in a dynamic flowing sequence of integrated Asanas.

Granville teaches regular classes and workshops in the Manchester area and is a frequent visitor to Ireland where he conducts weekend workshops with his many Yoga Friends. He also leads retreats and holidays abroad in Europe and the Middle-East.

His workshops and holidays are underpinned with early morning and evening Meditation sessions where the practioners are taught to sit quietly in the midst of their own experience. This quiet sitting is the basis of all spiritual practices and is common to all denominations.

Through the practice of Meditation we learn to understand our humanity, transcend our mortality and merge into the bliss of true Being or Ascendant Consciousness. This is our quest, this is Yoga. May we all grow in Love and Light.

James Higgins

James Higgin’s is from the US and his first love is surfing. However, in yoga he found a physical, mental, and spiritual exploration of the body mind and soul.

One of San Fransisco’s most popular yoga teachers, James first visited Ireland in 2002 and held a sell-out two-day workshop in Dublin that people are still talking about. James’ unique teaching style integrates his deep experience of Ashtanga Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, and Vipassana Meditation.

His classes synthesize core aspects of all three systems into an original and challenging form of yoga vinyasa meditation. This is a unique and original blend of yoga and meditation based on James’ commitment to finding a deeper connection to life through healing and awakening.

James teaches yoga as a way to balance and integrate presence of being using physical technique, creative pathways, breath awareness, strength through form, and deep resting mindfulness based on Buddhist meditation practices. An encouraging and suportive environment is provided for students' overall well-being.

Alex is also influenced by Dona Holleman and her thesis of the Seven Vital Principles. Taking them on board, one's practise becomes more energetic and light. Another yoga style by Shandor Remetes (Shadow Yoga) and Qui Gong taught her how to integrate breath, energy and movement.

In all those styles (Iyengar, Shadow, Donas Centering Down) I find a deep and immediate connection. Drawing upon Iyengar's Alignment, integrating the Chi as in Shadow Yoga and being Intent as in Dona Holleman's thesis, yoga becomes not only a physical practice but a way of life, since all these rules can be applied in daily life."

Alex is gentle in her approach to people while also brining people into quite strong postures and maintaining the precision of Iyengar throughout her classes.

Richard Spahn

Richard Spahn has studied Ashtanga with Pattabhi Jois and has been teaching Astanga for 15 years !

Richard began practicing yoga 23 years ago in the early 80's. He began with the spiritual styles of Sivinananda among others, and also with the precision and attention to physical posture of Iyengar yoga.

Richard was introduced to ashtanga by Cliff Barber and then studied for several years with Shri Pattabhi Jois in India.

Later in the 80's many people asked Richard to teach them a little of what he knew, and he began teaching regularily in Goa in the late eighties.

Richard is one of the most experienced Ashtanga teachers to ever teach in Ireland and his 7 day course in June each year books out well in advance, so you are advised to book early.

He has a long experience of both practice and teaching to draw on, and his gentle but attentive manner is very calming and non judgemental as he often offers only a finger to point the way to one opening up further in a posture, or a gentle adjustment to align the body better during his Ashtanga class.

He places a large focus on the breath, and enables people to enter deeply into one's inner space without forcing or pushing during this continious strong and challenging practice.

Richard will be teaching at the Burren Yoga and Meditation Centre June 2007.

Sotantar

Salvador Sotantar Sotantar has practiced and studied yoga, meditation and healing since his childhood in Spain. The Patanjali Sutras, the Hermes Kybalion and the words of Carlos Castaneda became important influences in his life.

By his early twenties he moved to the United States where he continued his study in yoga and meditation. Later he found his connection with the Planet Gongs and he devoted himself to learning the ways of the Gong and Kundalini Yoga. He was privileged to meet and receive teachings from the Master of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan, by whom he received his spiritual name to meditate on his life path and destiny - Sotantar - meaning beyond the boundaries of time and space and one who lives for the light.

Sotantar is now a widely recognized Gong Master and Kundalini Yoga teacher in his home base of Los Angeles and Orange County, as well as in Europe. He has worked with and had the opportunity to learn from world-renowned Gong Master Don Conreaux. He is also a Reiki Master Teacher, Sound Therapist and Hypnotherapist.

In addition to his regular classes, Sotantar brings his knowledge and energy of the Planet Gongs to workshops and retreats around the globe. He frequently visits Ireland, as he considers it home, and offers workshops throughout the country. The Burren is a special place of magical beauty, and some of the workshops take place outdoors in Nature.

Sotantar’s commitment to bringing awareness, peace, balance and joy to the universal community led him to create the Planet Gong Peace Project Meditation which takes place monthly. The Planet Gongs’ sacred sound creates a space for all the participants to experience joy and their true selves. The Gong’s vibrations carry throughout the world the intentions to expand global awareness, raising the frequency of the planet to a higher level of peace. The Project has simultaneous meditations occurring in various places in the world: North America, South America, Europe and growing.

His passion is teaching Kundalini Yoga and bringing the healing and transforming sounds of the Gong to the world. He enjoys giving Gong Baths and meditation and healing concerts to celebrate the peace, love and joy which is our natural state. He has recorded a series of CDs including the sacred sounds of the Planet Gongs and Tibetan Singing Bowls for meditation, awareness, and healing.
