      Instructor Bio Roisi Phelan

      Roisi Phelan has a lovely calm, caring, kind and friendly approach to her teaching, she will wholeheartedly welcome you to your weekend of Yoga, and take care to ensure good and safe practices

      She has been practicing yoga for over 25 years and teaching for 20.

      When Roisi first practiced yoga, she really enjoyed the deep connection with her body and the sense of release, as well as invigoration, a yoga practice can give.

      She noticed how the use of breath in asana and pranayama can have a powerful effect on the mind and emotions. This has led her to explore the area of breath work, and she builds this into all of her classes.

      Roisi qualified with the Irish Yoga Association (IYA) in 2000. This is a very well respected teacher training course which lasted 3 years.

      After she qualified she went undertook further individual tuition with Hanne Gillespie for 9 years.

      This was in the Viniyoga approach to Yoga, which respects the individual differences of each person and is often taught on a one to one basis. The Viniyoga approach teaches Yoga at the appropriate level for each person. Viniyoga is a very subtle and sensitive approach to yoga where the practitioner’s attention is guided inwards becoming aware of the breath, sensations in the body and over time even more subtle energetic flows of energy. Awareness of the breath is a very important aspect, and this awareness during the asana class is a preparation and guide for Pranayama, and a preparation for meditation practice.

      Roisi completed a number of trainings in Viniyoga with Hanne Gillespie between 2000 and 2004.

      After this, she went to study and train with Hanne’s teacher Paul Harvey in Bristol. Paul’s Practitioner/Teacher Training Program (1,000 hours) lasted another 4 years from 2004 to 2008.

      Roisi found Paul’s teaching and profound knowledge of yoga very inspiring, and this training included – Asana, Pranayama, Meditation, Yoga Sutra studies, Chant of related texts and sound, basic Sanskrit, Anatomy and Physiology, Yoga for groups and individuals, personal practice.

      This was a very comprehensive study of Yoga in it’s truest sense and is rare to find in these modern days of yoga.

      After this Roisi continued her training in this Viniyoga approach to Yoga with Paul Harvery for a further 2 years from 2008 to 2010. This training included Yoga Psychology and the Therapeutic application of Yoga for Individuals. Focus was on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and its application for modern life, Ayurveda, and the Viniyoga approach to Yoga Therapy.

      The Viniyoga approach to Yoga is very grounded with its foundation with T. Krishnamacharya, father of modern Yoga, and his son T.K.V. Desikachar. Paul Harvey was a student of Desikachar.

      The teachings include a solid foundation in Yoga Studies, and not just asana. It factors in the whole person.

      Roisi has been inspired by many teachers within this lineage over the years and found no need to look elsewhere as these teachings include all aspects of Yoga.

      From 2017 to 2019 Roisi also trained in TCTSY, Trauma Sensitive Yoga – Facilitator program. Through the Trauma Centre in Boston, USA. This study took her to Copenghan and Berlin.

      Roisi’s classes provide a very grounded yoga practice that is rooted in a strong tradition.

      In her classes Roisi will guide you to experience the breath and also to experience coordinating the breath with asana and movement of the body.

      It is suitable for all ages and all levels of fitness.

      Roisi is an experienced teacher, and has a lovely calm, caring, kind and friendly approach to her teaching. Her aim is to facilitate a learning atmosphere of care and support.

      Treat yourself to a stress free weekend of grounding and energizing yoga, relaxing yoga, calming meditation, deep relaxation, amazing vegetarian food, and a guided outdoor walk in the hills or by the sea.

      An ideal weekend in December to let go of the stresses and strains of everyday life and to let go into a very peaceful and tranquil environment with a gifted teacher and share some time with like-minded people.

      The Wellness Yoga class (Sat & Sun morn) will start with Breath awareness to ground and center followed by flowing sequences- movements coordinated with the awareness of breath making Yoga essentially a breath focused movement practice or moving meditation.

      Roisi uses her experience so each person will practice at their own level honouring where they are at and what is going on in their lives. There are no comparisons made between others and each person will be guided and choose what is right for themselves at that moment.

      These classes can lead to a very integrated sense of being, an acceptance and connection with oneself, and have the potential to leave you feeling restored or energised or both.

      Roisi believes that yoga is for everybody… no matter what age you are… what level of fitness you have… and the importance that the teacher guides each person to tune inwards in order to choose and flow with what is right for you at this moment.

      She believes in the importance of including a meditative awareness into the physical practice and utilises awareness of breath, to help bring us into the present moment.

      Each person is encouraged to practice at a level that is right for them on that day. There are no comparisons made between people, and each person is encouraged to tune inwards and sense what is appropriate for themselves.

      Roisi values friendliness, kindness, inclusivity, respect for all.

      “I am particularly interested in emotional wellbeing, and how Yoga can support people in their daily living. I’d aspire to create an atmosphere where people can touch into an aspect of Yoga that inspires them, that they may like to take home to practice. It may well be a space to pause, unwind, restore and re-energise through some movement, rest, breathing, and stillness. “

      The meditation will be a breath focused meditation based on the principles of focusing the mind on the flow and quality of the breath.

      This is done in a comfortable seated position to allow free and unhindered breathing.

      As one progresses this helps the practitioner to relax and become the ‘witness’ of our thoughts rather than

      be carried away by the thoughts.

      Beginners will be introduced gradually to meditation, which will deepen and lengthen in practice over the weekend and those wanting to just sit for longer periods will be allowed the space.

      This will be a breath focused meditation, where one will help keep one’s awareness with the here and now, by gently focusing on the breath.

      There may be a practice over the weekend that you liked, and would like to continue in your daily life. If you wish to take some of the practices home with you, Roisi can support you to do so, with due care and consideration.

      The key to experiencing the benefits of yoga and meditation in your everyday life, is to begin a daily practice between 10 and 15 minutes each day on your own after the retreat.

      It is always a joy when the teachings and benefits of yoga practice go beyond the confines of our yoga mat, and spill over into each and every moment of our day.

      Cultivating a Meditative practice with gentleness, using breath awareness, allows us to prepare for meditation and makes it accessible to all… even those new to Meditation.

      Roisi teaches a breath focused meditation where we become aware of the thoughts, but also stand back from them. Instead of being carried away by the thoughts, we use the anchor of the breath to become aware of them and allow them to come and go. And in time with practice, we become more aware of those gaps between the thoughts.

       

      On Saturday after breakfast, Dave will lead the group on a guided outing and we will either do a hill walk in the Burren hills or a walk by the sea. All these activities are optional.

       

       

      These guided outings are an important part of each eco yoga retreat and it is a lovely way to see some special places in the Burren well away from the usual tourist places.

       

       

      The secret forest has been described by one visitor as the type of place that fairies and elves live, and when they heard us coming they hid out of sight, but did not have time to take away their fairy veils and magic feelings which fill the air.

       

      During our guided outing we stop off for lunch at one of the best local restaurants or cafes. One favourite is the Ballyvaughan tea rooms where Stephen Spielberg flew in especially to order the cheese cake.

       

       

      The Burren is famous for it’s wild flowers, and it is lovely to see wild orchids during the months from May to September.

       

       

      Most people come on their own so it’s a great way to connect with like minded people and also make new buddies.

       

       

      Niall the food genius will be feeding us amazing vegetarian food and if you have ever wondered what it would be like to be on a weekend veggie retreat rest assured you will be pleasantly surprised and may even get hooked! He has a brilliant reputation for preparing vegetarian food to the highest standard.

      Roisi has many years now of experience teaching people from different backgrounds, age and level.

      On Friday evening and Saturday evening Niall our chef will prepare “with love” a delicious vegetarian dinner and many people have said they have not eaten vegetarian food as good as this at any restaurant.
