Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the worldwide hot Yoga craze known as Bikram yoga.
Born in Calcutta in 1946, Bikram claims to have began Yoga at the age of four.
Bikram says he practiced Yoga four to six hours a day with six thousand other students at Ghosh’s College of Physical Education in Calcutta and entered various championships in Yoga over the years.
If the mention of a ‘championship’ in Yoga, seems strange and against the ethics and whole philosophy of yoga… then read on.
At seventeen, after an injury to his knee during a weight-lifting accident, he had himself carried back to Bishnu Ghosh’s school, for he knew that if anyone could help to heal his knee, it was his teacher. Six months later, his knee had totally recovered. Ghosh was a celebrated physical culturist and the first to scientifically document Yoga’s ability to cure chronic physical ailments and heal the body.
Bikram was asked by Ghosh to start several Yoga schools in India. There Bikram came into his own. The schools were so successful that at Bishnu’s request Bikram traveled to Japan and opened two more. He has since brought his ‘Bikram’ methods of Yoga around the world.
His routine which he titles as Yoga is actually a hot fitness workout, using yoga-like postures in the most unyogic way.
Although the routine does not include any of the usual aspects of yoga such as awareness, breathwork, sensitivity with oneself, pranayama or meditation, it is a very good physical workout and one feels great after the practice.
Many people ‘get addicted’ to practicing this Bikram workout and attend many classes each week.
Bikram’s Yoga Routine
Bikrams Yoga is a routine of 26 poses, which works the whole body. The poses work synergistically and cumulatively to return the body to a balance state. The balance, and most importantly the tourniquet effect.
The Bikram technique allows the stretching, squeezing and massaging of the internal organs, flushing out the cardiovascular system and stimulating the endocrine and nervous systems.

Sweating and Heat
The room is intentionally warm so that your muscles will stretch more easily and also helps sweat out all the toxins in the body.
Controversy about the founder Bikram himself
Bikram is a very successful business man and has made a fortune out of his business of yoga where he reputably took out patents on his modified postures and prohibited anyone else from using them or his name.
There have also been a number of lawsuits taken against him for sexual abuse.
Although there appears no doubt that the man himself is very far removed from ‘the world of Yoga’, there are benefits from his Bikram fitness routine and many thousands of people continue to practice it around the world.
