    Amazing Vegetarian food

The vegetarian meals are cooked by Gearoid who used to work in a Hare Krishna restaurant in New York. Gearoid weaves together the best of ingredients using locally produced organic vegetables, fresh herbs and spices and ‘creates with love’ these amazing dinners each day at Burren Yoga.

Gearoid the cook at Burren Yoga

The vegetarian food at Burren Yoga has been described as restaurant standard and many people have said they have not eaten such good vegetarian food even in restaurants.

Gearoid’s menus and the care when choosing ingredients are combined with his love for cooking, and his care and attention to detail to both the presentation and the quality of the food that he serves.

The food at Burren Yoga centre is a combination of the best healthy vegetarian ingredients combined carefully with fresh herbs and spices to produce amazing vegetarian food which not only is delight for the taste buds and the enjoyment of eating, but one feels good afterwards as all the ingredients have been carefully combined together to be good for one’s health and wellbeing.

Gearoid used to work in a Hare Krishna restaurant in New York, and is very conscious of preparing the food with love and the effect this can have on the food that is being prepared.

The atmosphere in the kitchen is warm and intimate filled with fun and love as people enjoy this amazing vegetarian food.

Paddi who used to be the cook at Burren Yoga from 2001 to 2015 produced her own cookbook in 2008 which can be purchased at Paddi’s Heav’nly Delights Vegetarian Cook Book

Gearoid spent time cooking with Paddi when he started at Burren Yoga, and he often uses many of Paddi’s recipes.

The kitchen is the heart of the home

Many people are very surprised at the homely comfortable feeling they get when they arrive at Burren Yoga, and are often amazed at how ‘at home’  they can feel while they are away from their usual home.

The kitchen is certainly a very homely welcoming place at Burren Yoga, and when one arrives one is greeted by the smell of Gearoid’s cooking as he prepares one of his famous vegetarian dinners.

The atmosphere is very light and friendly and the only time you will hear silence in the kitchen is when Gearoid’s amazing meal is served up, and one enters into another world of taste delights and wonder at how good this food tastes.

    Vegetarian diet

Traditionally a vegetarian diet was recommended  part of the yogic way of life.  The main reason for this is that vegetarian food has a much clearer effect on the human body and in particular one’s state of mind.  This leads to much more steady levels of energy, and also to clearer states of consciousness during meditation.

Other foods such as meat can produce a tiredness and lack of clarity in one’s consciousness, thus resulting in difficulties with meditation as well as with health in general.

However Swami Satyananda said “Many people do more damage to themselves by worrying about their diets, than actually as a result of the food itself”.   So he advised  “not to worry about your food, but simply to practice a lot of yoga and meditation, and eventually your body and mind will speak to you and tell you what it not good for you.”

The more yoga and meditation one practices, the more in touch we get with ourselves.

And eventually one will simply not feel good if one eats certain foods, and at that stage it requires no effort to just allow those food types to fall away.  It is not like making a big effort to give something up.  It is simply like watching one’s body move on and leave behind what is not good for it anymore.

Another interesting point is that each one of us needs to discover this for ourselves.  And it can be different from one person to the next.

    Sampling the local cuisine

During our guided outings, Dave will bring you to one of the local restaurants or cafes for lunch.  Dave knows all the best places in the area and the restaurant owners look after us very well… giving us the best tables and making sure we are well looked after.

Although all the food prepared within the centre is vegetarian you are welcome to try whatever catches your fancy on the menus of these excellent places to eat.

The places we go include the Ballyvaughan tea rooms where Stephen Spielberg flew in especially for the cheese cake.    Linnane’s Seafood restaurant and many more.

    Teas and Coffees

We have real tea and real coffee at the yoga centre and a huge range of herbal teas.

Our water comes from our own well which is 160 foot deep into the Burren rock and comes out crystal clear with many natural elements which are very good for us.  All the water is filtered and you are welcome to bring your own bottle to top up during your stay.

You are also welcome to help yourself to tea or coffee in the kitchen at any time during your stay.

    Vegetarian Cookery courses

If you would like to take a cookery class with Paddi on any of our normal eco yoga retreats, just let us know in the comments box at the end of your booking form, and you will be welcome to spend time with Paddi in the kitchen either helping her prepare the dinner  or simply watching and chatting to her and taking notes.

We used to run special cookery courses, but we have found that giving you the choice on what weekend or week long retreat you would like to take the vegetarian cookery classes, is the best way to arrange this.
